In this article I would like to talk about several important metaphysical properties of hematite. Prior to that, let us examine some of hematite's physical and chemical properties. What is the composition of this significant and powerful stone? From its chemical formula, Fe2O3, we see that hematite is essentially iron oxide. There are several oxides of iron, and besides hematite the most abundant is magnetite. Hematite is a magnetic material, although its magnetism is weaker if compared to that of magnetite. Hematite stones are very compact and relatively heavy. They can range in color from black to reddish-brown, but by far the most dominant is the silver-gray metallic color. In most cases, when you purchase hematite it will be in form of tumbled stones of various sizes.

Metaphysical properties of hematite stones
Many of the metaphysical features of hematite can be deducted from the above information. First of all it is easy to see that the content of iron in hematite is one of the highest among all the spiritual crystals and semi precious stones. We know that throughout history, in the ancient Vedic astrology, as well as in the western astrology and esoteric practice, iron has always been associated with planet Mars. Actually today we have scientific evidences that hematite as iron ore is present on this planet. Therefore, if one wants to incorporate the attributes of Mars, that is, extreme, uncompromising energy, courage, strength, and will , there is no better stone than hematite. The connection is so straightforward that it is a mystery to me why this link is not recognized more widely. Think only about how people who suffer from anemia and do not have enough iron in their blood also suffer from the lack of courage, strength and will. On the other hand, there are people who are overabundant with respect to these masculine features, and they should probably opt in for another type of spiritual stones, for example some crystals that incorporate copper in their structure, such as malachite stones, or azurite. Copper is known to balance iron, and vice versa, so have this in mind if you need to establish proper equilibrium of spiritual energies within your own microcosm.
Hematite healing stones can be nicely incorporated into various types of jewelry. In order to decipher the hematite ring meaning, one should know that any ring in general means fidelity, devotion and commitment to some person. Healing properties of hematite, care, and jewelry
As far as the healing powers are considered, hematite is able to heal and regenerate those forces within our organism which are related to blood circulation, and skin rejuvenation. As already mentioned, it helps with anemia and bleeding. It also enhances lucidity, concentration, and clears the mind from negative patterns and thoughts.
Hematite can be combined with other metaphysical crystals, such as, rock crystal, rose quartz, amethyst, herkimer diamond, and citrine, which can be used to calm down its raw power and strength. From obvious reason hematite stones should not be cleansed with water. Instead, it should be placed on top of a cluster of quartz crystals, or tumbled stones and kept there for at least 24 hours.

I believe strongly that our physical body is actually rooted in, and affected by the higher planes of existence. So, if one has a condition somewhere in the physical body, there is an energy disbalance somewhere in the more subtle bodies of our microcosm. Sometimes, these forces can be directly or indirectly stimulated also by crystals and stones, and indeed one can try to help oneself this way, especially since it is totally harmless and cheap.
The best page I have found for explaining the meaning of hemadite. Other pages are fuzzy and little more than scams but you explain clearly what it is made from, its metaphysical meanings, and - most important to me - warn people with pacemakers not to use such a stone in a necklace or pendant.

Thanks for your comment, and yes, I agree with you that most of the pages dealing with the metaphysical meaning of crystals and stones are fuzzy. I know that it is not so easy to talk about such things, as the number of sources we can rely on is limited, and our intuitive knowledge still not well developed. We should all try to find a more scientific approach without going into too much superstition, but also without disregarding the obvious and important spiritual, healing and metaphysical background of crystals and stones.
I am confident that in the future people will attain much more precise knowledge about how the stones interact with our energy field, and how to use them properly to improve our health, energy and other aspect of life.
I think that a lot of this old knowledge has been lost and obscured by our technologies, and while so-called "pure" science has opened a lot of doors and de-bunked some silly superstitions, it has, in many ways, also thrown out the proverbial baby with the bathwater.

Thanks for your thoughts and yes, you a totally right. On the one hand "pure" science is beneficial, but on the other, it has become an obstacle in our pursuit for the truth. Finding the proper measure of science and metaphysics, especially when dealing with crystals and stones, such as hematite for example, is the best way to go, at least to my mind.

I agree totally with DzyMsLizzy. Science has it's place and there have been many advantageous discoveries. Though, along with a lot of phamaceutical "cures" come many unwelcome & sometimes dangerous side effects. I like to explore more natural remedies first and am looking forward to exploring the healing qualities of stones. One of histories old remedy of using leeches is being widely used today, although I hope I don't have to resort to that myself !!!

I suffer from osteoarthritis and obesity and have been meditating which is why I am interested in Hematite.
I have a few questions:
1. Is there a reference guide to the stones and crystals.
2. Is a hematite bracelet as powerful as a hematite stone?
3. I don't have quartz crystals and would want to purify the hematite, any other suggestions since you can't use water?
4. Malachite and Azurite were recommended to me a long time ago and I am wondering if there is a single stone composed of Malachite and Azurite and can this stone be used along with hematite?

2. Now, here comes the following dilemma. The question is whether or not the metaphysical properties of hematite (or any other stone for that matter) get affected, for example, by drilling holes through the stones which are to be used for bracelet production.
I think the answer is yes - the power of the manipulated stones is not as high as the power of the natural stones. This could be verified, for example, by taking Kirlian photos of the stones and monitor the changes near the holes. I have no idea whether this type of experiment has actually been performed, but it would be sort of a proof concerning this question.
3. You could use the other natural elements. In this case fire and air would be compatible. You can use candle flame and pass the stone through the flame a couple of times. Similarly, you can burn incense and let the hematite stones be impacted by the smoke for some time. There are numerous additional ways of crystal purification.
4. Malachite and Azurite are like twins in the world of minerals. They are both Copper minerals and very often can be seen together in a single rock. Likewise, their spiritual and healing properties are similar. I could imagine their combination is more difficult to be found as compared to the pure minerals, but it has to be possible (I have one such piece in my collection).
Now, keep in mind that hematite is an Iron mineral. Metaphysically, Iron is an element of Planet Mars. Copper, on the other hand is an element associated to Planet Venus. Therefore, when combining hematite with malachite or azurite we combine the male (Mars) with the female (Venus) energy. As far as I know, this is not a usual pairing, but otherwise there are no restrictions to using them both.

thanks for the nice words, and for pointing out the misleading sentence above. What I wanted to say is that the main power comes from the stones. Whether they are embedded in a hematite necklace, hematite bracelet, or we use them as loose tumbled stones is of secondary importance.
My opinion is that the power of the loose hematite stones is probably slightly greater, if nothing else then because the degree of human intervention on them is minimal and they are closer to their natural state. That is not to say that you shouldn't use hematite jewelry - I do that all the time.

Thank you for your quick reply and your clarification. The reason I ask is because I was planning on buying a silver and hematite bracelet to wear to a social gathering. I was attracted to its colour and shine and therefore looked up its meaning. Your original post above was the best I found and gave such a wonderful insight into hematite's properties.
I now understand why I was attracted to it:
1. For its energy balancing and grounding properties.
2. For its healing properties as I also have taken iron supplements in the past and feel tired sometimes even if I have rested.

How very interesting annie! Aversion just like attraction can tell you a lot. That is why I advocate to have faith and use your own intuition - not just blindly follow what somebody says about what your birthstones are! Your body knows best what's needed most in order to balance its own energy field.

While having great respect for Buddhist meditations and prayers, I have never really attained specific knowledge about their practices to be able to answer that question. As far as my understanding of Buddhism goes, it should not really matter what the material of the beads is, but that's my personal opinion, not recommendation.
